Born Hull 18/02/1898. Only child of William Harold Chew (1873-1935) & Minnie Frances Chew (1870-1946) of 16 Russell Terrace, Norfolk Street, Hull (CWGC address). Ex Blundell’s worker. He enlisted in Hull, on 01/03/1916, aged 18 years and 1 month. Described as 5 foot, 9 inches tall, 138 lbs weight, & 36 inch chest. Arrived in France, on 17/05/1917. Served with the Sherwood Foresters. Wounded in the thigh and gassed on 20/09/1917. Invalided to Sheffield hospital, England. Returned to his Unit, on 02/04/1918. Killed in action, on 18/04/1918, aged 20. Unmarried. His army effects were returned to his father, William. He is commemorated on the Pozieres Memorial, Somme, France.
His death was reported in the Hull Daily Mail, on 13/05/1918. His name was recorded on the Clifton Street, Primary School Memorial.
