PRIVATE KENNETH HERNE CHILD 220059. Born in October 1898, Kenneth was the fifth of six children to Edgar and Elizabeth Child of Burley House, Holderness Road, Hull. Enlisting in his hometown sometime in 1917, Kenneth follows that all-too familiar pattern of young recruits training at base camps in the UK before shipping to France late March 1918 and joining the 11th Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment near Arras on 2nd April 1918. He moved up into the front line at Armentieres a week later- it was to be his first and last taste of war. Kenneth Herne Child was killed in action on 14th April 1918 and his body was never recovered; his name is commemorated on the Ploegsteert Memorial; he was 19 years old.
