BORN GOVLESTON 11/11/1872. A ROYAL NAVAL RESERVE DECK HAND. HE MARRIED AT HULL IN 1912. HIS WIFE, CLARA ANN (FULLER) CHILVERS, LIVED AT 378 HAWTHORNE AVENUE. (CWGC ADDRESS). HE HAD FOUR STEP CHILDREN (JOE, BETSY, DAISEY AND JAMES W FULLER).
HE SERVED ON THE TRAWLER “CARLTON). LOST AT SEA, ON 21/02/1916, AGED 39. BURIED HEDON ROAD CEMETERY. HIS GRAVE INSCRIPTION, READS, “LOVED BY ALL”.
HMT Carlton, built by Cochrane & Sons, Selby in 1907 and hired at the time of her loss by Royal Navy, was a British navy minesweeper of 267 tons. On February 21st, 1916, HMT Carlton was sunk by a mine from the German submarine UC-6 (Matthias Graf von Schmettow), off Folkestone. 9 persons were lost.
