Clark, William Jackson

PRIVATE WILLIAM JACKSON CLARK 12/780. Born at Hull in 1890, William was the son of Thomas Clark and the late Catherine Hudson (1856-1897), of 14 Owens Square, New George St, Hull (1911 Census). Son of a Dockside Labourer. He had three brother and three sisters. An Oil Miller by trade.

He lived with his wife, Eliza and their daughter, at 1 Union Court, Great Union Street, Hull and 4, Mary’s Square, New George Street, Hull (War pension Address).

Enlisting at City Hall on 1st October 1914, he joined the fledgling 12th Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment, ‘The Sportsmen’, 3rd Hull Pals. As a member of ‘C’ Company, William served first in Egypt and then in the trenches of the Western Front. He was killed by “shellfire” a term which carries imagery none of us want to imagine, on 16th August 1916 and is buried in Le Touret Military Cemetery; he was 26 years old. His grave inscription, reads, “Rest in Peace”.
