BORN STRADDLETHORPE, GILBERDYKE, 14/09/1891. SON OF JOHN CLAYTON (1852-1905) & ELIZABETH CAWOOD (1858-1938), OF SHYLHAM LODGE, GILBERDYKE. ONE OF EIGHT CHILDREN. A FARM LABOURER. HE LIVED WITH HIS SISTERS, GERTIE AND JENNIE AND BROTHER FRED, AT THIS HULL ADDRESS. HE ENLISTED IN HULL. EX. PRIVATE, 7728, NORTHUMBERLAND FUSILIERS 1/5TH. TRANSFERRED TO THE 25TH TYNESIDE IRISH BATTALION. KILLED IN ACTION ON 1/09/1917, AGED 26. HE IS COMMEMORATED ON THE THIEPVAL MEMORIAL. HE WAS UNMARRIED AND HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE RETURNED TO HIS MOTHER. HIS DEATH AND ADDRESS WERE REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL, ON 3/06/1919.
HIS BROTHER, PRIVATE, FRED CLAYTON, 31ST MACHINE GUN CORPS WAS ALSO KILLED ON 25/04/1918, AGED 24,AND IS BURIED AT MORBECQUE BRITISH CEMETERY, FRANCE.
