BORN PETERBOROUGH 1894. ONLY SON OF THE REVEREND, ROBERT EDGAR CLEGG & ADA EMILY CLEGG, OF 65 MARLBOROUGH AVENUE (1911 CENSUS) AND 95 VICTORIA AVENUE, HULL (CWGC ADDRESS). BROTHER TO NELLIE CLEGG. BEFORE THE WAR HE WORKED AS A BANK CLERK. HIS FATHER WAS PASTOR AT HULL’S, FISH STREET CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH. HE ENLISTED EARLY IN 1915. ARRIVED IN FRANCE, ON 15TH APRIL 1916. SERVED AS A SECOND LIEUTENANT, IN THE ROYAL FIELD ARTILLERY. HE HAD RETURNED TO THE FRONT FOR ONLY THREE WEEKS, WHEN HE WAS KILLED, ON 17TH OF FEBRUARY 1917, AGED 23. HE IS BURIED ON THE SOMME. HE LEFT £659 IN HIS WILL TO HIS FATHER, WHO MOVED TO 63 MARLBOROUGH AVENUE (PROBATE ADDRESS).
HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL ON THE 23RD FEBRUARY 1916, WITH HIS PHOTOGRAPH. *
