BORN WRAWBY, LINCOLNSHIRE, 22/10/1899. SON OF WILLIAM AND CHARLOTTE CLIFF, OF 6 HAMPTON TERRACE, SEATON STREET, HULL,. ELDEST OF FIVE CHILDREN, INCLUDING TWIN SISTERS, ROSE AND VIOLET. EDUCATED AT FOUNTAIN ROAD BOARD SCHOOL. HE WORKED AS A GROCER FOR THE HULL CO-OPERATIVE SOCIETY, AT WATERLOO STREET, HULL.

HE ENLISTED IN HULL, ON 25/10/1917, AGED 18. SERVED AS PRIVATE, 29465, LOYAL NORTH LANCASHIRE REGIMENT. HE WAS KILLED AT CHATEAU THIERRY, ON 27/05/1918, AGED 19. THIS WAS A SCENE OF HARD FIGHTING TO HALT THE GERMAN SPRING OFFENSIVE. IT WAS THOUGHT HE MAY HAVE BEEN WOUNDED BY AIRPLANE MACHINE GUN FIRE, TAKEN PRISONER AND TREATED AT THE BRITISH CASUALTY STATION CAPTURED BY THE GERMANS. HE DIED ON 27/05/1918, AGED 19.

HE IS COMMEMORATED ON THE SOISSONS MEMORIAL. HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS FATHER, WILLIAM. HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL, ON 19/09/1919. * HIS PHOTOGRAPH WAS PUBLISHED IN THE DE RUVIGNY ROLL OF HONOUR, VOLUME 5. *
