BORN HULL 1892. SON OF JOHN CLOSE (1846-1928) AND FANNY WATSON (1849-1932), OF 60 FOUNTAIN ROAD, HULL, OF 33 ST LEONARDS ROAD, HULL (1911 CENSUS) AND GRIMSHAW LANE, PATRINGTON. HE WAS A BROKER’S CLERK. LIVED IN HULL AND AT 32 PELHAM GROVE, LIVERPOOL, WHEN WAR BEGAN.

HE ENLISTED IN LIVERPOOL, ON 10/11/1914, AGED 23 YEARS AND 300 DAYS. DESCRIBED AS 5 FOOT 10.75 INCHES TALL, 168 LBS WEIGHT, 39 INCH CHEST. ARRIVED FRANCE, ON 12/02/1915. SERVED IN THE 10TH KINGS LIVERPOOL (SCOTTISH) REGIMENT. PROMOTED TO LANCE CORPORAL ON 17/06/1915 AND THEN, CORPORAL, ON 16/10/1915. KILLED IN ACTION, ON 09/08/1916, AGED 24. HE HAD SERVED IN THE ARMY FOR 1 YEAR AND 273 DAYS. HIS NAME IS RECORDED ON THE THIEPVAL MEMORIAL TO THOSE MISSING ON THE SOMME.
HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS BROTHER, WATSON CLOSE (1879-1970), LIVING AT 110 CRANBROOK AVENUE, HULL. A SINGLE MAN. HE LEFT PARENTS, THREE BROTHERS, JAMES, WATSON AND STEPHEN AND THREE SISTERS, MINNIE, EMILY AND HANNAH.
HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL, ON 29/08/1916 & 09/08/1917.
