BORN GOOLE 29/6/1891. SON OF LUCY ELLEN & LATE THOMAS COCKING, OF 11, GERTRUDES TERRACE, COURTNEY STREET, HULL (WAR PENSION ADDRESS). A DOCK LABOURER. A FORMER PRISONER, WHO HAD SERVED TIME AT HMP WAKEFIELD IN 1911 & 1912, FOR THEFT AND BEING DRUNK. HE RESIDED AT FOURTH AVENUE, GOOLE, WHERE HE WAS WELL KNOWN. HE ENLISTED IN HULL. SERVED WITH THE ROYAL NAVAL DIVISION. SAW CONSIDERABLE ACTION, AT GALLIPOLI, EGYPT AND FRANCE. WOUNDED AT THE SOMME, ON 13/11/1916. HE DIED OF MULTIPLE GRENADE WOUNDS, ON 14/11/1916, AT NO:11 CASUALTY CLEARING STATION, ON 14/11/1916. BURIED ON THE SOMME. HIS GRAVE INSCRIPTION, READS “AT REST”
