BORN HULL 1896. ONLY CHILD OF HENRY GARABALDI COE (1864-1935) AND SARAH ELLEN BENTLEY (1867-1934), OF 4 ST LEONARD’S AVENUE, HESSLE ROAD (1901 CENSUS) AND 14 BARTON TERRACE MANCHESTER STREET, HULL (ARMY ADDRESS). HIS BROTHER, JOHN COE (1899-1906) HAD DIED YOUNG.
EMPLOYED AS A PACKING BOX MAKER. HIS FATHER WAS A DECKHAND IN THE ROYAL NAVAL RESERVE.
HE ENLISTED IN HULL, ON 09/12/1915, AGED 19 YEARS AND 3 MONTHS. DESCRIBED AS 5 FOOT, 6.5 INCHES TALL, 135 LBS WEIGHT, 36 INCH TEST, SCAR ON LEFT WRIST. POSTED TO FRANCE ON 06/05/1916. SERVED AS PRIVATE, 21065, 8TH EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT. KILLED BY SHELL FIRE, ON 18/08/1916, AGE 19. HE HAD SERVED IN THE ARMY FOR 253 DAYS, AND 105 OF THESE IN FRANCE. HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS MOTHER SARAH ELLEN. HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL ON THE 9TH SEPTEMBER 1916, WITH HIS PHOTOGRAPH. * HIS NAME IS LISTED ON HULL GRAMMAR SCHOOL MEMORIAL.HE IS COMMEMORATED ON THE THIEPVAL MEMORIAL TO THE MISSING, ON THE SOMME.
