BORN HULL 1889. SON OF CHARLES & CATHERINE COLLINS, OF 1354, SPRING BANK WEST, HULL. BROTHER OF CHARLES, STANLEY, MABEL AND ELSIE.
HE WORKED AS A FRENCH POLISHER. DESCRIBED AS 5 FOOT, 8 INCHES TALL, 138 LBS WEIGHT, 35 INCH CHEST.
HE MARRIED GERTRUDE ALICE CHEESEBROUGH, ON 14/10/1909, AT HULL’S HARLEY STREET REGISTRY OFFICE. THEY LIVED AT NUMBER, 4, AND NO 5, DOVER CRESCENT, FOLKESTONE STREET, IN 1915 (WAR PENSION RECORDS). THEY HAD TWO CHILDREN, JAMES EDGAR AND WINIFRED.
HE ENLISTED IN HULL, ON 06/12/1915. MOBILIZED ON 10/04/1916, AGED 26 YEARS AND 330 DAYS. ARRIVED IN FRANCE, ON 13/07/1916. SERVED IN THE 7TH EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT. KILLED IN ACTION ON 07/11/1916, AGED 27. HE IS COMMEMORATED ON THIEPVAL MEMORIAL, AT THE SOMME.
HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL, ON 06/11/1916 & 07/11/1919.
HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS WIDOW, GERTRUDE, WHO WAS AWARDED A WEEKLY WAR PENSION OF 22 SHILLINGS AND 11 PENCE FOR HERSELF AND HER CHILDREN.
HIS NAME IS INSCRIBED ON THE STONE PILLARS OF ST MARY’S CHURCH, SCULCOATES LANE, HULL.
