BORN HULL 1892. THIRD SON OF JOHN WILLIAM BORTHICK CONWAY (1862-1941) & THE LATE ELEANOR MARGARET GILL (1860-1911), OF 27, JAMES STREET, HULL AND 5, DERBY TERRACE, CLARENDON STREET, HULL (WAR PENSION ADDRESS). FOURTH OF SEVEN CHILDREN. HE WORKED AS A BLACKSMITHS STOKER.
HE ENLISTED IN HULL. SERVED AS PRIVATE, 10667, 6TH EAST YORKSHIRE PIONEERS. POSTED TO THE DARDENELLES, ON 14/07/1915. ERNEST HAD BEEN WOUNDED AT GALLIPOLI AND HIS PHOTOGRAPH WAS PRINTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL ON 20TH SEPTEMBER 1915.* HE DIED OF WOUNDS IN FRANCE, ON 09/04/1918, AGED 25. HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS SISTER, ROSE REYNOLDS.
HE IS BURIED AT LILLERS COMMUNAL CEMETERY. HIS GRAVE INSCRIPTION, READS, “EVER IN THOUGHT FROM FATHER SISTERS & BROTHERS”.
HIS BROTHER, JOHN WILLIAM CONWAY DIED IN HULL, IN 1918, AGED 34.
