BORN HULL 19/06/1885. SON OF EDWARD CONWAY (1844-1885) & MARY HEALAS (1853-1895), OF HULL. CHIEF ENGINEER AT THE GREAT NORTHERN STEAM FISHING COMPANY. HUSBAND OF SUSANNAH LILLIAN CONWAY & TWO CHILDREN AT THIS NAVAL ADDRESS. AND LATER 48 QUEENS AVENUE, BARTON ON HUMBER, LINCS. A ROYAL NAVAL RESERVE ENGINEMAN. HE SERVED ON THE MINESWEEPER, TRAWLER, “EVADNE”DIED AT SEA, ON 27/02/1917, AGED 32. COMMEMORATED ON CHATHAM NAVAL MEMORIAL. HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL, ON 27/02/1918.
Evadne, built by Mackie & Thomson, Ltd., Glasgow in 1907 and operated at the time of her loss by Royal Navy, was a British navy trawler of 189 tons. On February 27th, 1917, Evadne was sunk by a mine from the German submarine UC-65 (Otto Steinbrinck), 8 miles south of the Owers lightvessel. 12 persons were lost.
