Born Hull, 1892. Son of John William Cook and Maria Elizabeth (Hewson) Dixon (1864-1946), at 3, Studley Street, Holderness Road, Hull (war pension address). He lived with his step father, James William Dixon, and Grandmother, Jane Elizabeth Hewson, two brothers and sister, at this address and later 3, Kent Street, Holderness Road, Hull. He worked as a Shop Assistant (1911 Census). He was a single man, also known as John William Dixon, in Census Records. Described as 5 foot, 9 inches tall, 140 lbs weight, 35 inch chest, grey eyes, brown hair, Weslyan Religion.
He enlisted on 31 Aug 1914. Served with the 1st/1st, East Riding Yeomanry. Posted to Egypt, on 27 Oct 1915. Returned to England, sick, on 11 Dec 1917. Discharged on 17 Jan 1918, after 3 years and 140 days army service. Awarded the Silver War Badge (No: 401737), British War Medal and Victory Medal. Died of Tuberculosis, on 9 Jun 1919, aged 26.
