Cooke, John Alderson

Withernsea WW1 Memorial, Queens Street. The memorial was erected in 1923 at a cost of £451, the funds for which were collected through public subscription. A service of dedication was held in 1924. Inscribed in four columns, are the names of sixty-four men killed in World War I.

BORN HULL 1880. SON OF HENRY AND FRANCES S. COOKE, OF BICESTER. ONE OF FIVE CHILDREN. HE WAS EDUCATED AT HULL GRAMMAR SCHOOL.

MARRIED IN 1908. HIS WIFE ANNIE CALEY, LIVED AT 30, EAST PARK AVENUE, HULL, 36, CHEVERTEN AVENUE, WITHERNSEA. THEY ALSO LIVED AT 67 MIDDLETON STREET, HULL WITH THEIR THREE CHILDREN. (1911 CENSUS). EMPLOYED IN HULL AS A BREWER’S CLERK.

ENLISTED HULL. FORMERLY, 6113 ARTILLERY TRAINING SCHOOL. TRANSFERRED AS PRIVATE, 202743, 12/13TH NORTHUMBERLAND FUSILIERS. KILLED IN ACTION ON 04/10/1917, AGED 37.

HIS NAME IS RECORDED ON THE TYNE COT MEMORIAL, BELGIUM, AND THE HULL GRAMMAR SCHOOL WW1 MEMORIAL.

HE IS ALSO COMMEMORATED ON THE WITHERNSEA WW1 MEMORIAL.
