Cooper, Joseph (Joe)

BORN HULL 22/05/1886. SON OF WILLIAM HENRY COOPER (1863-1942) & CHARLOTTE ELIZABETH FOX (1863-1941), AT 7, EDWARDS SQUARE, COOMMERCIAL ROAD, HULL. ONE OF SEVEN CHILDREN. SON OF AN OIL MILLER. HE WAS EMPLOYED AS AN ENGINEER. HIS WIFE, MARY ISABEL COOPER & DAUGHTER LUCY, LIVED AT 16, CRAVEN STREET, HULL (1911 CENSUS). THEY ALSO RESIDED IN BEVERLEY.

HE ENLISTED IN POCKLINGTON. SERVED WITH THE 1ST EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT, IN FRANCE FROM 08/09/1914. KILLED ON THE 1ST JULY 1916, THE FIRST DAY OF THE BATTLE OF THE SOMME. HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO BOTH PARENTS. HE IS COMMEMORATED ON THE THIEPVAL MEMORIAL.
HIS BROTHER, PRIVATE, ALBERT EDWARD COOPER, ALSO SERVED IN THE 1ST EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT AND WAS KILLED AT ARRAS, ON 09/04/1917, AGED 26.

ONE OF FIVE BROTHERS WHO SERVED IN THE WAR, THE COOPER’S WERE FEATURED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL ON 12/02/1916.
