BORN HULL 18/08/1899. SON OF FRED LAKEY CORNELL & MARY ANN CORNELL OF 55, WEST PARADE, HULL (1901 CENSUS). THEY MOVED TO 6, YEOMAN ROAD, UPPERTHORPE, SHEFFIELD (WAR PENSION ADDRESS). BROTHERS, ARTHUR AND FRED AND THREE MARRIED SISTERS. HE WORKED AS A TIN SMITH AND DRAPER’S ASSISTANT.
HE ENLISTED AT SHEFFIELD, ON 16/09/1916. DESCRIBED AS 5 FOOT, 1 INCH TALL, 102 LBS WEIGHT, 32 INCH CHEST, BROWN HAIR, SCAR ON LEFT WRIST. POSTED TO FRANCE, ON 05/04/1918. HE SERVED WITH THE PRINCE OF WALES OWN, 9TH WEST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT. HE DIED OF SHELL WOUNDS AT ROUEN HOSPITAL, ON 07/06/1918, AGED 18. HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS MOTHER, MARY ANN.
HE IS BURIED AT ST. SEVER CEMETERY EXTENSION, ROUEN, FRANCE. HIS GRAVE INSCRIPTION, READS, “NOT FORGOTTEN”.
