BORN COTTINGHAM 1893. ONLY SON OF WILLIAM AND ADA COUPLAND. HIS TWO SISTERS LIVED AT 47, EDGAR STREET, HESSLE ROAD, HULL. EMPLOYED AS A MILL HAND. HE MARRIED ALICE HAYTON, AT HULL REGISTRY OFFICE ON 27/03/1915. HIS WIFE AND TWO SONS, LEONARD (1915-1918) AND THOMAS (1916-2001), LIVED AT 129, NORTH GATE, COTTINGHAM, EAST YORKSHIRE (WAR PENSION ADDRESS).
HE ENLISTED IN HULL, ON 11/12/1915. DESCRIBED AS 5 FOOT, 5.5 INCHES TALL, 112 LBS WEIGHT, 33.5 INCH CHEST, OF “POOR” PHYSICAL DEVELOPMENT. HE WAS POSTED TO FRANCE, ON 13/07/1916. SERVED AS PRIVATE, 22752, 7TH EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT. HE WAS KILLED ON THE SOMME, ON 08/11/1916, AGED 23. HE IS COMMEMORATED ON THE THIEPVAL MEMORIAL. HE HAD SERVED IN THE ARMY FOR 333 DAYS.
HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS WIDOW, WHO MOVED TO 2, PROVIDENCE PLACE, EDGAR STREET, HULL.
