BORN HULL, 1882. SON OF JOSEPH COX AND SARAH ANN MAINPRIZE, OF 43, MAPLE STREET, HULL.

HE MARRIED ON 18/12/1906. HIS WIFE, EMMA JANE (PRESTON) SHARP, LIVED AT 6, WALTERS TERRACE, SCULCOATES LANE, HULL, WITH DAUGHTER OLIVE (BORN 15/05/1907).

JAMES COX HAD BEEN A REGULAR ARMY SOLDIER AND REVERSIST. SERVED IN SOUTH AFRICA. HE WORKED AS A DRIVER/LABOURER, FOR THE HULL CORPORATION HEALTH DEPARTMENT.

ONE OF THE FIRST TO BE SENT TO FRANCE WITH THE BRITISH EXPEDITIONARY FORCE. HE ARRIVED IN FRANCE ON 11/09/1914. SERVED AS PRIVATE, 3868, 1ST BATTALION, COLDSTREAM GUARDS. HE WAS KILLED IN ACTION, AT YPRES, 23/10/1914, AGED 32. COMMEMORATED ON THE MENIN GATE MEMORIAL.

HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL TIMES, ON 17/04/1915, WITH HIS PHOTOGRAPH. *

HE IS LISTED ON THE MAPLE STREET MEMORIAL WITH 22 OTHERS, INCLUDING HIS BROTHER, THOMAS COX, EYR, AND BROTHER IN LAWS, CPL, SHARP & PTE, J. JOHNSON, EYR – ALL FROM MAPLE STREET, HULL.
