BORN NOTTINGHAM 21/07/1895. SECOND SON OF JOHN CRABTREE (1867-1949) & SARAH HANNAH PEARSON (1870-1912), OF 39 ALBERT AVENUE, HULL AND WOODSIDE, NORTH FERRIBY. HE HAD ONE BROTHER, HERBERT AND ONE SISTER, LIVE. HIS FATHER MANUFACTURED DECORATIVE TIN BOXES AND EMPLOYED STAFF.
STEPHEN WAS EDUCATED AT HULL’S HYMER COLLEGE. SPENT TWO YEARS WITH THE OFFICER TRAINING CADETS AND ON ENLISTMENT BECAME A PLATOON SERGEANT, WITH THE 1ST EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT.
HE ENLISTED IN THE HULL PALS, WHEN WAR BEGAN. SERVED AS A PRIVATE, WITH ‘C’ COMPANY, 12TH EYR. COMMISSIONED INTO THE 12TH EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT ON 27/11/1914. SERVED IN EGYPT FROM 29/12/1915. ARRIVED IN FRANCE ON 08/03/1916. PROMOTED TO 1ST LIEUTENANT, 12TH EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT. HE WAS KILLED AT FLERS, ON 28/06/1916, AGED 20.
HIS NAME IS RECORDED ON HULL’S HYMER COLLEGE MEMORIAL.
HE IS BURIED AT THE SOMME. HIS GRAVE INSCRIPTION READS, “SON OF JOHN & SARAH CRABTREE HIS SOUL STILL LIVES”
