BORN BEVERLEY ST MARTIN’S, 22/11/1894. SON OF DANIEL CROSS (1855-1943) AND JANE ATKINSON (1856-1917), OF 6 WHARF TERRACE, BECKSIDE. A SINGLE MAN. A REGULAR SOLDIER, WHO HAD SERVED IN INDIA AND SOUTH AFRICA. HE RE-ENLISTED AT DRIFFIELD, ON 05/11/1903. SERVED AS A SERGEANT, IN THE 2ND BATTALION, YORK AND LANCASTER REGIMENT. HE WAS WOUNDED IN THE LEFT CALF IN 1917. KILLED IN ACTION DURING THE GERMAN SPRING OFFENSIVE, ON 21/03/1918. HE IS COMMEMORATED ON THE ARRAS MEMORIAL TO THE MISSING. HIS NAME IS RECORDED ON THE WW1 BEVERLEY MEMORIAL.
HIS BROTHER, CORPORAL, STEPHEN CROSS, 6585, 1ST EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT WAS KILLED AT HOOGE, ON 09/08/1915, AGED 31. HE IS COMMEMORATED ON THE MENIN GATE MEMORIAL.
