HE ENLISTED IN HULL, AS, PRIVATE, 6042 NORTHUMBERLAND FUSILIERS. HE ARRIVED IN FRANCE, ON 09/09/1915. TRANSFERRED TO THE 21ST MACHINE GUN CORPS. PROMOTED TO LANCE CORPORAL. WAS KILLED IN ACTION, ON 23/03/1918, AGED 43. HE LEFT HIS ARMY EFFECTS TO HIS WIDOW, EMILY.
HE HAD INHERITED £217 FROM HIS YOUNGER BROTHER, PRIVATE, JOHN JOSEPH CROWTHER, 8TH POST OFFICE RIFLES, WHO WAS KILLED ON THE SOMME, ON 15/09/1916, AGED 34. THEIR PARENTS HAD LOST TWO SON IN THE WAR AND BOTH DIED THEMSELVES IN 1919.
