BORN HULL 05/08/1882. SON OF JOHN JAMES CULLEN & ELIZABETH WRIGHT, OF 7 JUBILEE AVENUE, GOULTON STREET, HULL (CWGC ADDRESS). A FISHERMAN. HE MARRIED BEATRICE WHITELAM (1883-1919), AT ST BARNABAS CHURCH, HULL, ON 13/11/1901. THEY LIVED AT 66 JACKSON STREET, HULL AND THIS CWGC ADDRESS. HE SERVED AS SECOND HAND ON THE MINESWEEPER “RESONO”, SUNK ON 26/12/1915. HE WAS AGED 33. IS COMMEMORATED ON THE CHATHAM NAVAL MEMORIAL. THEIR ONLY SON JOHN DIED IN 1940 DURING THE SECOND WORLD WAR.
Resono, built by Cook, Welton & Gemmell, Ltd., Beverley in 1910 and owned at the time of her loss by Royal Navy, was a British navy trawler of 230 tons. On December 26th, 1915, Resono was sunk by a mine from the German submarine UC-5 (Herbert Pustkuchen), 2m SExE Sunk lightvessel. 13 persons were lost.
