Davis, Alfred

Born 24 Dec 1875 • Edgware, London. Son of Charles William Davis (1847-1912) and Isabella Wiggins (1847-1925). He had eight brothers and two sisters. 

He married Ethel Maud Barnes (1877–1917) at Hull, in 1900, aged 24. His wife was born in Hull. They had eight children and lived at 3, Olive Grove Convent Lane, Anlaby Road, Hull (1911 Census). He worked as a Dredgeman (1911 Census). His wife died on 1st May 1917.

He served as a Deck Hand, Royal Naval Reserve,  on the HM Trawler  “Remindo”. Lost at Sea, on 02/02/1918, aged 42. Killed by a mine explosion of Cape Barfleur, France. 3 Officers & 16 Naval Ratings lost. He is commemorated on the Chatham Naval Memorial, Kent.

HMT Remindo was built for George F. Sleight, Grimsby (GY.1089); Yard No 361; Launched 29/02/1917; In September 1917 Rqd by the Royal Navy as an anti-submarine vessel with Hydrophone listening equipment; Fitted with 1 x 12 pdr.; No. FY 3065; On 02/02/1918 vessel sunk by explosion off Portland; German claims state torpedoed by UC-79 on the French side of the Channel. 20 crew were lost.

The guardian of his children, Herbert and Cyril, was Olive May Jones of 145 Albert Avenue, Hull (War Pension address). His other sons, George. Harry and Alfred were looked after by Mr R.G Middlemiss and later the Hull Seaman’s Orphanage.

His brother, Albert Morgan Davis, RASC,  died in Egypt, on 12 Feb 1919, aged 31.
