BORN HULL 1897. SON OF ANNIE AND SAMUEL DAY. LOST AT SEA ON 13/05/1918, AGED 21. 20, JOHN STREET, HULL, WAS HIS PROBATE ADDRESS. HE LEFT £213 TO FATHER SAMUEL DAY, A POLICE INSPECTOR, AT 8, ADDERBURY CRESCENT, ADDERBURY GROVE, HULL. HIS NAME IS LISTED ON THE ELLERMAN-WILSON LINE WW1 ROLL OF HONOUR. NO CWGC RECORD? HIS DEATH WAS A HUGE BLOW FOR THE FAMILY, AND HIS NAME APPEARS IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL MULTIPLE TIMES IN THE MEMORIAM COLUMN, UP TO THE 1930’s. HIS BROTHER JOHN WILLIAM DAY, ROYAL NAVY, HMS “ABOUKIR” WAS ONE OF HULL’S FIRST CASUALTIES. LOST AT SEA ON 22/09/1914, AGED 25.
On the outbreak of war in 1914, the then SS Hedwig was in the Russian port of Archangel; it was confiscated, renamed Ibis and transferred to the West Russian Steamship Co, then later chartered by the UK Shipping Controller. At the time of its loss, the ship was operated by the Hull-based Ellerman-Wilson line. On the 12th May 1918, while on voyage from Bilbao to Glasgow with a cargo of ore. IBIS was in collision with SS WHIMBREL, 6 miles W of the Lizard, United Kingdom and sank. Seven crew were lost.
