George William Dayes was born in Beverley on 7 September 1892, the eldest son of Herbert and Harriet Dayes. He lived in Hotham, where he worked as a farm cowman. He enlisted in Hull.
When war was declared George enlisted in the West Yorkshire Regiment, and, serving with the 2nd Battalion which became part of the 23rd Brigade of the 8th Division, embarked for France in March 1915.
George William Dayes died on 1 July, 1916, the first day of the Battle of Albert – the day that proved to be the most costly single day in British military history.
