BORN HULL 1882. SON OF WILLIAM DEAN, OF 48 GOODWIN STREET, HULL. A SEAMAN AND MARRINER ON A MUD DREDGE. HE HAD SERVED IN THE ROYAL NAVY FOR TEN YEARS. HE MARRIED ADA ELLEN RIMMINGTON (1883-1951), AT HULL, ON 06/03/1911. THEY LIVED AT AT 3, SYDNEY TERRACE, SPYVEE STREET, HULL (ARMY ADDRESS).
HE ENLISTED IN THE HULL PALS, ON 26/11/1914, AGED 31 YEARS AND 300 DAYS. DESCRIBED AS 5 FOOT, 5.5 INCHES TALL, 36 INCH CHEST, 161 LBS WEIGHT. PROMOTED CORPORAL, ON 04/09/1915. HE SERVED IN EGYPT AND ARRIVED IN FRANCE, ON 08/03/1916. TRAINED AS A MACHINE GUNNER. HE WAS REPORTED MISSING, AT THE SOMME, ON THE 13/11/1916. HE HAD SERVED IN THE ARMY FOR ONE YEAR AND 353 DAYS. HIS WIFE DID NOT RECEIVE NOTIFICATION OF HIS DEATH UNTIL 01/10/1917, WHEN SHE RECEIVED A £5 WAR PENSION FROM THE MINISTRY OF PENSION. SHE WROTE TO THE AUTHORITIES ASKING FOR CONFIRMATION OF HER HUSBAND’S DEATH, SAYING THE “SUSPENCE AND ANXIETY” OF NOT KNOWING WAS “SENDING HER MAD”. HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS WIDOW ADA, & TWO SONS, WHO MOVED TO 9 EMERALD TERRACE, CAMPBELL STREET, HULL. (THEIR FIRST SON DIED IN INFANCY IN 1911). SHE RECEIVED A WEEKLY WAR PENSION OF 24 SHILLINGS AND TWOPENCE. HE ALSO LEFT TWO BROTHERS AND THREE MARRIED SISTERS.
HIS NAME WAS RECORDED ON THE WAR MEMORIAL AT ST THOMAS CHURCH, CAMPBELL STREET, HULL, WHICH WAS DESTROYED IN AN AIR RAID DURING WW2. HE IS COMMEMORATED ON THE THIEPVAL MEMORIAL TO THE MISSING.
