BORN HULL 1884. ELDEST SON OF MICHAEL (1862-1947) & LOUISA DEVANEY (1864-1912), OF 10 BENJAMIN TERRACE, DALTON STREET, HULL AND 16 HOOD STREET, THE GROVES, HULL. ONE OF SEVEN CHILDREN AND THREE BROTHERS KILLED IN THE WAR. EMPLOYED AS AN OIL MILLER.

HE MARRIED IN 1905. HIS WIFE, LILLY (1887-1961) & SIX CHILDREN (LILY, MARGARET AND JOHN WILLIAM, VIOLET, MARY ANN & WALTER), LIVED AT 5, LOCKWOOD TERRACE, LOCKWOOD STREET, HULL (WAR PENSION ADDRESS) & AT 10 THOMAS AVENUE, WESTMORELAND STREET.

HE ENLISTED IN HULL. SERVED AS CORPORAL, WITH THE WEST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT. DIED OF WOUNDS, ON 31/03/1918, AGED 35.

HE IS BURIED ON THE SOMME, AT DOULLENS COMMUNAL CEMETERY EXTENSION NO.1. HIS GRAVE INSCRIPTION, READS, “THY WILL BE DONE”
HIS BROTHERS, ARTHUR AND THOMAS DEVANEY, SERVED IN DIFFERENT REGIMENTS AND WERE BOTH KILLED AT THE SOMME, IN 1916. THEY ARE COMMEMORATED TOGETHER ON THE THIEPVAL MEMORIAL, FRANCE.
