BORN HULL, 07/04/1884. SON OF THOMAS DOUGLAS & FLORENCE ADA DOUGLAS. EDUCATED AT ST MARKS SCHOOL. ENLISTED IN THE ROYAL GARRISON ARTILLERY IN DECEMBER 1904. HE MARRIED FLORENCE ADA REDFERN, AT ST MARKS CHURCH, HULL. THEY LIVED AT THIS ADDRESS WITH DAUGHTER, FLO (BORN 13/08/1913). HE SERVED 13 YEARS AND JOINED THE RESERVES. HE WAS MOBILIZED AT THE OUTBREAK OF WAR. SERVED IN FLANDERS AND FRANCE WITH THE BEF. FROM AUGUST 1914. HE SAW MANY ACTIONS. WOUNDED AT ROCKLINCOURT NEAR ARRAS, HE DIED OF WOUNDS, THE SAME DAY, ON 18/05/1918, AGED 34. HIS COMMANDING OFFICER, WROTE, “HE WAS A BRAVE SOLDIER, KEEN WILLING AND RELIABLE, AND IT WAS A SHOCK TO BOTH OFFICERS AND MEN WHEN HE DIED.”
HIS NAME IS RECORDED ON ST JOHN THE BAPTIST CHURCH WAR MEMORIAL. HIS DEATH AND ADDRESS WERE REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL. HE IS ALSO LISTED IN THE DE RUVIGNY ROLL OF HONOUR, VOLUME 4.
HE IS BURIED IN FRANCE, AT AUBIGNY COMMUNAL CEMETERY EXTENSION. HIS GRAVE INSCRIPTION, READS, “LOVED IN LIFE REMEMBERED IN DEATH ONE OF THE BEST”.
