BORN HULL 1894. ELDEST SON OF JAMES HENRY DOWNES (1858-1919) & ROSE ELLEN BURRELL (1875-1915) OF 47 , LORRAINE STREET, HULL (1911 CENSUS). ONE OF EIGHT CHILDREN. A LABOURER FOR THE HULL OIL COMPANY. ENLISTED IN HULL. SERVED WITH THE 2ND EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT. WOUNDED AT YPRES. HE WAS BADLY GASSED AND WOUNDED IN THE LUNGS AND THIGH BY SHRAPNEL. HE WAS INVALIDED TO ENGLAND AND DIED OF WOUNDS, AT YORK HOSPITAL, ON 12/05/1915, AGED 21. HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS FATHER, JOHN.
HIS NAME IS LISTED ON THE SUTTON CHURCH & STONEFERRY ROLL OF HONOUR. BURIED AT SUTTON-ON-HULL (ST. JAMES) CHURCHYARD. HIS FUNERAL WAS PHOTOGRAPHED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL, ON 16/05/1915.
