BORN HULL 1896. YOUNGEST SON OF GEORGE DOWNS (1859-1943) & ANN ELIZABETH DAY (1857-1930), OF 6, CHARLOTTE TERRACE, CLARENDON STREET, AND 76, CLARENDON STREET (Hull Daily Mail Address – 22/04/1918). SON OF A SHIP’S FOREMAN. ONE OF SIX CHILDREN. HE WORKED AS A CLERK.
HE ENLISTED AT INVERNESS, SCOTLAND. SENT TO FRANCE, ON 10/11/1915. INVALIDED BACK WITH FROST BITE, TO COMPTON HOUSE, SHERBURN, DORSET. RETURNED TO FRANCE AND SERVED WITH THE 7TH QUEENS OWN CAMERON HIGHLANDERS. KILLED DURING THE WITHDRAWAL TO ARRAS, ON 27/03/1918, AGED 22. COMMEMORATED ON THE ARRAS MEMORIAL TO THE MISSING. UNMARRIED. HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFTTO HIS MOTHER ANN.
HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL, ON 22/04/1918. HE IS PICTURED WITH HIS FRIEND IN THE HDM 04/01/1916. *
