BORN HORNSEA 11/08/1888. SON OF ANN ELIZABETH BROOKS (1857-1928) & JAMES THOMAS DRY (1854-1914). ONE OF ELEVEN CHILDREN. HE HAD SERVED IN THE ROYAL NAVY RESERVE, AND HAD WORKED IN COMMERCIAL HOTELS IN WITHERNSEA. HE MARRIED IN HULL IN APRIL 1915. HIS WIFE SARAH ELLEN (COLLINS) LIVED AT THIS ADDRESS. THEIR SON ERNEST WAS BORN IN 1916, BUT DIED THE FOLLOWING YEAR. HE ENLISTED IN HULL. SERVED IN ‘C’ COMPANY, 13TH YORKSHIRE HUSSARS. DIED OF WOUNDS, 24/11/1917, AGED 29. HIS ARMY PENSION AND EFFECTES WERE LEFT TO HIS WIDOW, SARAH ELLEN. HE IS BURIED AT ANNEUX BRITISH CEMETERY, NORD, FRANCE. HIS GRAVE INSCRIPTION, READS, “TO MEMORY EVER DEAR”.
HIS BROTHERS, WILLIAM ALBERT DRY, SERVED IN THE KINGS ROYAL RIFLE CORP, AND JAMES FARRAND DRY, SERVED IN THE ROYAL NAVY AND SURVIVED THE SINKING OF THE “ABOUKIR”.
