Lance Corporal Walter Stuart Dunn (1894-1917) of Beverley
Walter Stuart Dunn was born September 1894, the son of George Dunn, a stationary engine driver, and his wife Cordelia (nee Taylor) of 50, Eastgate, Beverley, Yorks.
He enlisted in the East Yorkshire Regiment 8 September 1914 and trained at Pocklington, Ripon and Salisbury. He embarked to Egypt in December 1915.Walter transferred to the Army Cyclist Corps, and finally to the East Lancashire Regiment, “Z” Coy. 11th Bn., and served with the Expeditionary Force in France and Flanders from Spring 1915, where according to a report in the Beverley Guardian he was wounded three times and once gassed. He was injured on 21 October 1917 and died of his wounds in hospital, on 24 October, 1917, aged 23.
His grave inscription, reads, “HE SLEEPS WITH ENGLAND’S HEROES IN THE WATCHFUL CARE OF GOD”
