BORN HULL 1867. SON OF CHARLES EDWARD & MARTHA ELSIE ELLARBY – 89 ETON STREET, HULL. EDUCATED CHURCH STREET SCHOOL. EMPLOYED FOR MAY YEARS AS SKIPPER, WITH THE RED CROSSFLLET OF BOXING TRAWLERS. JOINED THE RNR MINESWEEPER SERVICE ON 06/02/1915. APPOINTED AS SECOND MATE, TO THE MINESWEEPER ‘EARL LENNOX’, ON 02/01/1916. KILLED OFF THE IRISH COAST, BY AN EXPLOSION OF A MINE, ON 23/101/1917, AGED 51
HE MARRIED TWICE. HIS FIRST WIFE WAS ELIZA WINDER, AND THEY HAD SIX CHILDREN. HE MARRIED HARRIET ANN BUTLER AT ST BARNABAS CHURCH ON 19/02/1911. HIS DEATH WAS RECORDED IN THE DE RUVIGNY ROLL OF HONOUR, VOLUME 4. HIS FIVE SONS SERVING ON MINESWEEPERS AND THE OTHER IN FRANCE. HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED ON THE 29/10/1917.
Earl Lennox, built by Cook, Welton & Gemmell, Ltd., Beverley in 1914 and operated at the time of her loss by Royal Navy, was a British navy trawler of 226 tons. On October 23rd, 1917, Earl Lennox was sunk by a mine from the German submarine U-79 (Otto Rohrbeck), south of Islay Sound. 7 persons were lost.
