BORN ISLEHAM, CAMBRIDGESHIRE, 1877. SON OF GEORGE ELLINGTON (1858-1931) AND ELIZABETH PAMMENT. RAISED BY HIS GRANDPARENTS. HE CAME TO HULL TO WORK AS A RULLYMAN. DESCRIBED AS 5 FOOT, 7.5 INCHES TALL, 36-38 INCHES TALL, 131 LBS WEIGHT, “GOOD” PHYSICAL DEVELOPMENT.
HE MARRIED IN HULL, ON 25/12/1900. HIS WIFE, MARY ELLEN DIXON AND SIX CHILDREN, LIVED AN ALMOST NOMADIC EXISTENCE – 42 CENTRAL STREET, HULL (1911 CENSUS), 8 NORFOLK TERRACE, NORFOLK STREET, HULL AND 1 LORNE TERRACE, LORNE STREET, HULL (WAR PENSION ADDRESSES).
HE WAS A TIME EXPIRED TERRITORIAL WHO RE-ENLISTED ON 28/11/1914. SERVED WITH THE HULL PALS, IN EGYPT. ARRIVED FRANCE ON 08/03/1916. KILLED IN ACTION, AT SERRE, ON 13/11/1916, AGED 39. HE HAD SPENT 1 YEAR AND 351 DAYS IN THE ARMY.
AFTER HIS DEATH, HIS WIDOW RECEIVED A WEEKLY PENSION OF 33 SHILLINGS FOR HER SIX CHILDREN. SHE MOVED TO 2 SARAH’S TERRACE, ALEXANDRA STREET, HULL AND THEN TO 26 WORSLEY STREET, BEVERLEY ROAD, HULL. THEIR YOUNG DAUGHTER ELSIE, DIED ON 16TH SEPT 1917 AND HER WAR PENSION WAS REDUCED ACCORDINGLY.
