Private, MAURICE EVERSON, 11/895. Born in Hull in 1895 Maurice was the eldest of eight children to Andrew Everson (1856-1916) and Martha Stainton (1875-1962) of 3, Pelham Street, Hull, Bon Accord, New North Road, Withernsea and 17 Williamson Street, Hedon Road, Hull (War Pension address).
A Hairdresser before the war, he enlisted on Thursday 10th September 1914 at Hull City Hall joining the 11th Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment, ‘The Tradesmen’, 2nd Hull Pals. He was with them from the start, through training at Hornsea, Beverley and Ripon, right the way through Egypt, the Somme and Oppy Wood, and he will have been an entirely different man to that which put down his scissors and comb to answer the call of King & Country. Maurice was killed in action on 28th March 1918 standing in the way of the German Spring Offensive, as the Allied lines broke and the army went into full retreat. His body was never recovered and his name is commemorated on the Arras Memorial; he was 23 years old.
