BORN HULL JAN 1890. THIRD SON OF JOHN FREDERICK EYRE (1862-1929) & MARY WARDELL EYRE (1864- ), AT 17, BENVISTAS AVENUE, WOODCOCK STREET, HULL (WAR PENSION ADDRESS). SON OF A HOUSE PAINTER. HE WAS ONE OF SEVEN CHILDREN. HAD THREE BROTHERS AND THREE SISTERS. HE WORKED AS A STOKER AND WAREHOUSE LABOURER. DESCRIBED AS 5 FOOT, 3.5 INCHES TALL, 34-36 INCH CHEST, VERY GOOD CHARACTER.
HE ENLISTED IN HULL, ON 18/12/1914. SERVED WITH THE 12TH EYR (HULL PALS), IN EGYPT AND FRANCE. TRANSFERRED AS PRIVATE, 3/7277, TO THE 11TH EYR. WOUNDED BY GUN SHOT IN THE RIGHT ARM, AT SERRE, ON 13/11/1916. DISCHARGED AS UNFIT ON 05/09/1917. HE HAD SERVED IN THE ARMY FOR 2 YEARS AND 262 DAYS. HE DIED OF WOUNDS (CEREBRAL MENINGHITIS), IN HULL, ON 26/08/1918, AGED 28.
HE IS COMMEMORATED ON THE WW1 MEMORIAL, AT ST JOHN THE BAPTIST CHURCH, NEWINGTON, HULL.
