Farmery, Louis

BORN HULL 1893. ENLISTED BEVERLEY. SON OF WILLIAM FARMERY FROM SWANLAND, HULL. HE WORKED AS A LABOURER FOR THE NORTH EASTER RAILWAYS. A FORMER EAST YORKSHIRE RESERVIST, HE WAS CALLED UP TWO DAYS AFTER THE WAR BEGAN. HE WAS IN THE TRENCHES FOR 13 DAYS WHEN HE WAS KILLED BY A SHELL FRAGMENT, ON 18/10/1914, AGED 22. HE IS COMMEMORATED ON THE PLOEGSTEERT MEMORIAL.
The Farmerys were a long established Swanland family having lived in the village since, possibly, before 1830. Louis was born on 7 December 1891 to William, a gas man, and
Amy. Amy had been married previously, to James Tate, and had three children with him. She had a further eight with William of whom two had died by 1911. In that year Louis was living with his parents and two of his siblings and was employed as a general labourer.
He joined the 1st Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment in Beverley, possibly before the start of the War, as he was in France by 10 September 1914. He died on 18 October 1914, probably in fighting around Capinghem, in Northern France, and his body was never found. He is remembered on the Ploegsteert Memorial, in the Berks Cemetery extension, located 12.5km south of Ypres. 11,000 servicemen are recorded on this memorial, none of whom died in major offensives, but all killed in day-to-day trench warfare or in small scale set engagements.
