Fawcett, Thomas Henry

BORN COTTINGHAM 1899. SON OF THOMAS HENRY & ELIZA FAWCETT, OF 240 PARK ROW, NORTHGATE, COTTINGHAM (CWGC ADDRESS). SON OF A POSTMAN. HE WORKED AS A NEWSBOY AND GARDENER. HE ENLISTED AT HULL, ON 27/10/1916, AGED 17 YEARS, 11 MONTHS AND 28 DAYS. HIS ARMY RECORDS DESCRIBE HIM AS, 5 FOOT, 5 INCHES TALL, 120 LBS WEIGHT, 32 INCH CHEST, SCAR OVER RIGHT EYE, AND WESLEYAN RELIGION. JOINED THE EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT AND POSTED TO THE RESERVES. HE WAS MOBILISED AT BEVERLEY, ON 02/03/1917, AGED 18 YEARS AND 4 MONTHS. ARRIVED IN FRANCE, ON 02/01/1918. TRANSFERRED TO THE 22ND DURHAM LIGHT INFANTRY, ON 05/01/1918. HE WAS REPORTED MISSING, THEN KILLED IN ACTION, ON 26/03/1918, AGED 19. KILLED AT MORCHAIN -PERTAIN, DURING THE GERMAN SPRING OFFENSIVE. HE HAD SERVED IN THE ARMY FOR 1 YEAR AND 151 DAYS. HE IS COMMEMORATED ON THE POZIERES MEMORIAL TO THE MISSING ON THE SOMME. UNMARRIED. HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS MOTHER, ELIZA, WHO WROTE TO THE AUTHORITIES, REQUESTING A PHOTOGRAPH OF HIS GRAVE. HE ALSO LEFT THREE BROTHERS, AND THREE SISTERS.
HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN HDM 15/01/1919. HIS NAME IS RECORDED ON THE COTTINGHAM METHODIST CHURCH WW1 PLAQUE.
