He enlisted in the Royal Navy, on 13 Sep 1911. Served as a Signalman, on HMS Pathfinder the first war ship to be sunk by a propelled torpedoe, 05/09/1914. CWGC lists 261 fatalities from the Pathfinder, including two civilian catering staff. He is commemorated on the Chatham Naval Memorial, Kent.
