BORN HULL 1897. POPULARLY KNOWN AS ‘AGGY’. SON OF JOHN FITZGERALD (1872-1928) & MARY ELIZABETH HODGSON (1875-) AT 27, SIDNEY STREET, GROVES, HULL, AND 3, JOHNSON BUILDINGS, TREVOR STREET, HULL (WAR PENSION ADDRESS). HE HAD FIVE BROTHERS AND TWO SISTERS
HE WAS ARRESTED AS TEENAGER FOR STEALING TOY GUNS FROM A CRATE AT HULL DOCKS. HE WAS LESS THAN 5 FOOT, 2 INCHES TALL, 34-36 INCH CHEST
BEFORE THE WAR HE WAS A WOOD SAWYER AND WORKED AT THE BRITISH OIL AND CAKE MILLS.
HE ENLISTED ON 06/05/1915 AND INSTANTLY REGRETTED IT. HIS SERVICE RECORD IS A LIST OF ABSENCES WITHOUT LEAVE, INSOLENCE, DRUNKEN AND DISORDERLY. POSTED TO FRANCE, ON 21/12/1915. SERVED WITH THE 1ST EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT.
IN 1916, HE SHOT HIMSELF IN THE FOOT WHILE CLEANING HIS RIFLE AND RECEIVED THREE MONTHS FIELD PUNISHMENT NO:1. FOR A SELF INFLICTED WOUND.
HE WAS WOUNDED BY SHELL FIRE, WHILE BRINGING UP WATER FOR ANOTHER REGIMENT.
HE SERVED TWO YEARS WITH THE 1ST EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT AND DIED OF SEVERE LEG WOUNDS, ON 01/06/1917, AGED 20. HE IS BURIED IN FRANCE.
HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED, WITH HIS PHOTOGRAPH, IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL ON 13TH JUNE 1917. *
