Flay, James Charles

BORN HULL 1883. SON OF WILLIAM FLAY (1828-1889) AND ELIZABETH CARMICHAEL (1833-1925), OF 11, SALISBURY CRESCENT, NEWLAND AVENUE, HULL (WAR PENSION ADDRESS). HE HAD TWO BROTHERS AND TWO SISTERS. ALL THREE SONS DIED DURING WW1.

HE MARRIED  CATHERINE TOOHEY (1883-1958), AT HULL, IN 1907, AGED 23. THEY HAD FIVE SONS AND A DAUGHTER. HE LIVED AT 11, WELTON TERRACE, WASSAND STREET, HULL (1911 CENSUS) AND 27, WALCOTT STREET, HESSLE ROAD, HULL. WORKED AS A DOCK LABOURER.

HE ENLISTED IN HULL. SERVED 4TH TYNSIDE IRSH BRIGADE. KILLED IN ACTION, ON 09/04/1917, AGED 33. COMMEMORATED ON THE ARRAS MEMORIAL, FRANCE.

HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS WIDOW, CATHERINE AND SIX CHILDREN

HIS BROTHER ALBERT ERNEST FLAY (1876-1915) DIED AT SEA, ON THE HMT “SEBASTIAN”, ON 22/05/1915.

HIS BROTHER,  WILLIAM THOMAS FLAY (1874-1916), DIED AT SEA, ON S/S “TREWYN” ON 24/03/1916.
