BORN HALIFAX, 1870. SON OF FRANCIS FLEMING (1843-1913) AND JANE WORRELL, OF 75 VICTORIA CRESCENT, ECCLES, MANCHESTER.
THOMAS WORKED AS A CARD AND BELTING MANUFACTURER. HE LIVED IN HULL. ENLISTED SOUTHPORT. HE MARRIED SARAH MAWER IN JULY 1915. SERVED IN THE 8TH WEST RIDING REGIMENT. KILLED IN ACTION, AT GALLIPOLI, ON 12/08/1915, AGED 44. HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS MOTHER, JANE. A WAR GRATUITY WAS AWARDED, ON 22 JULY 1916, TO HIS SISTER, MISS JEANNIE FLEMING, AT 11, BERESFORD AVENUE, HULL (WAR PENSION ADDRESS)
Notes. The 8th Battalion, Duke of Wellington’s West Riding Regiment, was part of the 32th? Infantry Brigade in the 11th Northern Division. The Bn landed at Suvla on the 6th Aug at B Beach and moved forward in attack on Lala Baba which it was engaged day and night and heavy losses. The Bn withdraw to a rest area on the 8th Aug but was moved to the area Tekke Tepe Ridge on the 9th Aug and took part in the advance and fighting at the Cut. Relieved on the 11th Aug and moved to the beach area.
It was moved to the area Chocolate Hill on the 13th Aug to man the trenches and was relieved on the 19th Aug.
On the 21st Aug the Bn was brought up with the 9th West Yorkshires to attack Ismail Oglu Tepe, and fought at Hetman Chair and Green hill and again suffered heavy losses until relieved on the 23rd Aug.
It moved into the trenches at Jephson’s Post on the 27th Aug.”
