Freer, Arthur

Private Arthur Freer born in South Cave on the 15th August 1895 enlisted on the 10th December 1915 with the 8th Battalion, East Yorkshire Regiment. His Service Number was 21676.
Arthur was 5’10 ¼ tall and weighed 156lb and had a chest size of 38”. His parents where called George Thomas & Drusilla Freer.
After his attendance at South Cave School he was working (aged 15) for a market gardener in South Cave, but when he enlisted his occupation is given as Farmer’s Horseman.
Arthur landed in France on the 16th June 1916 and served with “D” Coy. 8th Bn. East Yorkshire Regiment. He was killed in Action on 18 August 1916 in the Battle of the Somme. He had been in the Army for 253 days, and 64days  in France. He is Commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial and was awarded the Victory Medal & the British War Medal.
