BORN HULL 1884. ELDEST SON OF THOMAS CHANTRY FROW (1857-1933) & THE LATE SARAH HUTCHCROFT (1859-1905), OF 19 , FENCHURCH STREET, HULL. HE HAD TWO BROTHERS AND FOUR SISTERS. BOTH BROTHERS, CHARLES (ROYAL NAVY) AND ROBERT FROW (RAMC), ALSO SERVED IN THE WAR.
BEFORE THE WAR THOMAS FROW WORKED AS A STEWARD ON FOR THE WILSONSHIPPING LINE AND WAS WELL KNOWN ON THEIR PASSENGER BOATS. THOMAS DIED AT SEA FORM EXPOSURE. HE IS LISTED ON THE MARFLEET ROH. HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL ON 5TH MAY 1917, WITH HIS PHOTOGRAPH. *
SS Zara, built by Wm. Hamilton & Co., Port Glasgow in 1897 and owned at the time of her loss by Ellerman’s Wilson Line, Ltd., Hull, was a British steamer of 1.331 tons. On April 13th, 1917, Zara, on a voyage from London to Trondhjem with general cargo, was torpedoed and sunk by the German submarine U-30 (Franz Grünert), 90 miles W3/4S of Helliso Island. 27 persons were lost.
