BORN HULL 1897. SON OF BARNETT FURMAN (1875-1939) & LEAH GOLDSTEIN (1876-1962), LIVING AT 108 OSBORN STREET, HULL & 45 WILLIAM STREET, HULL (WAR PENSION & CWGC ADDRESS). SON OF A BOOT DEALER. HE HAD FIVE BROTHERS AND THREE SISTERS. HARRY HELPED IN THE FAMILY SHOE MAKING BUSINESS, ON MYTONGATE, HULL. HE WAS 5 FOOT, 2.5 INCHES TALL, BROWN HAIR AND EYES, MEDIUM COMPLEXION. HE TRAVELLED ABROAD WITH HIS BROTHER ABY. CARRYING $25, AGED 16, HE HEADED FOR THE UPMARKET TENNESSEE VALLEY CLUB, ROCHESTER, NEW YORK. HE WORKED AS A WAITER AND VALET AND SPENT SOME TIME AT NIAGRA FALLS, USA, DURING 1912.
HARRY RETURNED TO ENLIST IN HULL, AT THE OUTBREAK OR WAR.
HE SERVED AS A CYCLIST AND CORPORAL, IN THE 1/4TH EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT. THE BATTALION WAS DRAINING THE YARRA BANK TO BAZENTIN, WHEN HARRY WAS WOUNDED RESCUING HIS SCHOOL FRIEND SIMON LEVINE, ON 16/01/1917. HARRY LOST A LEG AND DIED OF WOUNDS, ON 17/01/917, AGED 20. HARRY AND SIMON LEVINE ARE BOTH BURIED AT BAZENTIN-LE-PETIT MILITARY CEMETERY, FRANCE. THIER MOTHER’S RECEIVED A HALF CROWN WEEKLY WAR PENSION.
HARRY IS REMEMBERED ON HIS FATHERS GRAVE, AT THE DELHI STREET CEMETERY, EAST HULL. HE IS COMMEMORATED ON THE HULL JEWISH COMMUNITY ROLL OF HONOUR.
HIS BROTHER, PRIVATE. LOUIS FURMAN, YORK HUSSARS, ALSO SERVED IN THE WAR AND LIVED AT 24 WILLIAM STREET, HULL.
