BORN BEVERLEY 24/03/1885. SECOND SON OF NIEL AND MARY ANN GALLAGHER (1862-1900), OF 31 HOLME CHURCH LANE, BEVERLEY (WAR PENSION ADDRESS). HE RESIDED IN THE BEVERLEY MINSTER AREA. ONE OF SEVEN CHILDREN AND SIX SONS. HIS FATHER WAS FROM COUNTY MAYO AND WORKED AS A TANNER’S LABOURER.
HE ENLISTED IN HULL. POSTED TO FRANCE, ON 12/08/1914. SERVED WITH THE 2ND COLDSTREAM GUARDS. DIED OF WOUNDS AT NO:13 GENERAL HOSPITAL, BOULOGNE, ON 10/01/1915, AGED 30. HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS ONLY SISTER, MARY ELLEN SULLIVAN, WHO WAS THE FAMILY HOUSEKEEPER. HE IS BURIED AT BOULOGNE EASTERN CEMETERY. HIS GRAVE INSCRIPTION, READS, “ON WHOSE SOUL SWEET JESUS HAVE MERCY”
