BORN HULL 1889. SON OF JOHN GALLOWAY (1848-1912) & SARAH ANN FOWLER (1859-1947), AT 46, CLEVELAND STREET, HULL (CWGC ADDRESS). SON OF A PAINT GRINDER FROM DUBLIN. ONE OF ELEVEN CHILDREN. ONE OF THREE BROTHERS KILLED IN 1916.
A GENERAL LABOURER AND A MEMBER OF THE HULL GARDENER SOCIETY. HE WAS HUSBAND TO ALICE SILLIS, LIVING AT EAGLE TERRACE, THE GROVES, HULL. HE ENLISTED IN THE ROYAL FIELD ARTILLERY, IN HULL. HE DIED OF WOUNDS AT NO:4 CASUALTY CLEARING STATION, IN BELGIUM, ON 15/11/1916, AGED 27. HE IS BURIED AT DOZINGHEM MILITARY CEMETERY. HIS ARMY EFFECTS WERE LEFT TO HIS WIDOW, ALICE AND THEIR YOUNG SON.
HIS BROTHER, PRIVATE, GEORGE DAVID GALLOWAY, 7TH EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT, WAS KILLED ON 17/07/1916, AGED 30. ANOTHER BROTHER, PRIVATE, THOMAS GALLOWAY, 1ST EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT, WAS KILLED ON 16/09/1916, AGED 23. BOTH WERE KILLED AT THE SOMME IN 1916.
