BORN BEVERLEY, ON 19/06/1880. SON OF THOMAS GAMBLE (1854-1929) & ANNIE ELIZABETH POUGHER (1855-1932), OF 135, GLASGOW STREET, HULL. BOTH SONS WERE KILLED IN THE WAR.
HE MARRIED, SARAH JANE HODGSON (1882-1949), AT SCULCOATES REGISTRY OFFICE, HULL, ON 24/09/1904. HIS WIFE, SARAH & SIX CHILDREN, LIVED AT 6, LUTHER TERRACE, ALEXANDRA STREET, HULL. THOMAS WAS A FORMER WOOD CARVER, FOR MR WALTON, WRIGHT STREET, HULL.
HIS ARMY RECORDS DESCRIBED HIM AS 5 FOOT, 5.5 INCHES TALL, 119 LBS WEIGHT, 36-38 INCH CHEST, “GOOD” PHYSICAL DEVELOPMENT.
HE ENLISTED IN HULL, ON 27/11/1915. CALLED UP FOR SERVICE, ON 15/07/1916. POSTED TO FRANCE, ON 23/12/1916. SERVED IN THE 12TH DURHAM LIGHT INFANTRY. HE WAS WOUNDED ON 05/04/1917 (GUNSHOT WOUNDS TO CHEST AND LEFT ARM) AND HAD ONLY BEEN BACK FOR A MONTH WHEN HE WAS KILLED IN ACTION, ON 14/10/1917, AGED 36. HE LEFT A WIDOW AND SIX YOUNG CHILDREN, WHO MOVED TO 17, WAINFLEET TERRACE, STANLEY STREET, HULL (WAR PENSION ADDRESS). SHE WAS AWARDED A WEEKLY PENSION, ON 42 SHILLINGS, FROM 06/05/1918.
HE IS COMMEMORATED ON THE TYNE COT MEMORIAL, BELGIUM.
HIS DEATH WAS REPORTED IN THE HULL DAILY MAIL, ON 01/11/1917. *
HIS ONLY BROTHER, PRIVATE, CHARLES GAMBLE, 13TH EYR, WAS KILLED SIX MONTHS EARLIER, ON 19/04/1917, AGED 23. HE IS COMMEMORATED WITH HIS BROTHER, ON THE WW1 MEMORIAL, ST JOHN THE BAPTIST CHURCH, NEWINGTON, HULL.
