BORN YORK 1892. SECOND SON OF JOHN ALEXANDER & MARY JANE GARNISS. ONE OF FIVE CHILDREN AT 31, NICHOLSON STREET, HULL (1911 CENSUS) AND 23, BLAYDES STREET, COTTINGHAM ROAD, HULL (WAR PENSION ADDRESS).

EMPLOYED AS A MOTOR BUS GREASER AND WIREMAN FOR THE HULL CORPORATION ELECTRICAL TRAMWAYS.

HE ENLISTED IN HULL AT THE START OF WAR. FORMERLY, PRIVATE, 1311, 1/4TH EAST YORKSHIRE REGIMENT. TRANSFERRED TO THE 150TH MACHINE GUN CORPS. HE WAS KILLED IN ACTION, ON 23/04/1917, AGED 24.

HE WAS UNMARRIED AND HIS ARMY PENSION WAS LEFT TO HIS MOTHER.

BURIED AT WANCOURT MILITARY CEMETERY, PAS DE CALAIS, FRANCE. HIS GRAVE INSCRIPTION, READS, “BE THOU FAITHFUL UNTO DEATH AND I WILL GIVE THEE A CROWN OF LIFE”

HIS NAME IS INSCRIBED ON THE PILLARS INSIDE ST ST MARY’S CHURCH, SCULCOATES LANE, HULL. ALSO LISTED ON THE WW1 MEMORAIL AT ST JOHNS, NEWLAND, CHURCH, COTTINGHAM ROAD, HULL.
